Canyons, cut from a stump
Each piece begins as a single eucalyptus stump and ends as what weather leaves behind in rock. The maker works the way erosion does – undercutting, terracing, opening arches – until the stump reads less like timber and more like a canyon wall: a form found by removal.
It is then charred using shou sugi ban, a Japanese technique of wood burning which brings out the grain and adds inertness to the wood. The black is not a finish laid over the surface; it is the surface, burnt into being.
Because every stump grew differently, no two voids can repeat. What stands in the room is geology at furniture scale – hollowed, settled, and still slowly moving.
